On Saturday 6th March, 18 gymnastic acrobats and tumblers headed to Southampton to take part in the Southern Region Championships. The finalists of this event form the Southern Region team taking part in the British Finals in June. The MK Springers gymnasts ranged in age from 9-18yrs of age, many of whom had not taken part in such an important competition before.
First on in the morning was trio group, Megan Ellis, Freya Clarke and Jai Harper. The trio set the standard high by coming away with gold medals and were selected for the Inter- Region competition in April.
Grade 1 woman’s pairs saw Lucy Jackson/Imogen Kingsman and Natalie Keyte/Jodie Blackhurst doing well in a very large group.
They were followed by Grade 2 woman’s pairs with Bekki Novack/Ella Turner, Ruth O’Donnell/Lauren Cunild and Sian Evans/Abigail Maxwell competing against another large entry.
The Grade 2 woman’s groups followed with Stef Parker/Anna Ryan/Harriet Evans up against fellow training mates of Natalie Keyte/Lucy Jackson/Jodie Blackhurst but Bekki Novack/Sian Evans/Jenny Becket come away with Bronze medals.
In the more difficult Grade 3 Woman’s Pairs Rhiannon Owen/Katie Adams performed two spectacular floor routines and came away with Silver medals.
MK Springers gymnasts were also tumbling: Abigail Maxwell, Becki Novack and Jenny Beckett all came away with Bronze medals. Katy Adams received a Silver medal.
Ella Turner was the first gold medal winner of the day. Ruth O’Donnell & Sian Evans both performed clean runs and came away with gold medals also. The three girls will now go to represent the Southern Region in the British Acrobatics & Tumbling finals to be held at Stoke-on-Trent in June.
Coach Carolyn Evans said “Our MK Springers Gymnasts have worked very hard to prepare for this competition, it paid off this weekend. We are still a very young club compared to most in the region but we have achieved a very high level and intend to capitalise and improve on this for the next competition”
